I have picked up a rudimentary knowledge of the business world from reading the business section in the newspaper regularly, and I'm taking night school business classes so I can better understand my money. In the meantime, how can I make sense of how to allocate the portion of my paycheck I withold? The terminology and my lack of investing experience make this intimidating. I allocate at 5% biweekly. I am 25 years old.

Why do Americans allow themselves to owe so much money to credit card companies, other people, banks, etc. etc.? I, myself, cannot sleep knowing I owe money to someone, yet to most people, it doesn't bother them at all? Why do you need to have the fancy toy NOW, when you can wait a few months and actually earn the money to be able to pay for it off completely (obviously, I'm not including houses, cars, or education in the equation because most people can't pay for those things outright). Do you really need that $500 wardrobe, $1000 jewelry, $1400 TV or $30,000 SUV?

Financial Planners: I make about 80K a year and have good credit (mid 700's). I live within my means and dont have any extravagant outlays ( I budget and stick to it). Thanks to a layoff which took me 1.5 years to get a new job (at a 50% pay cut), I now have 35K in credit card debt. I avail myself of many -0- interest offers and transfer alot to reduce my interest paid but I still have some interest-bearing accounts. I have about 10K in 401K. All the financial GURU's say don't rob your 401K to pay off credit cards. But, I don't understand their logic $-wise. Now, I totally get that most Americans don't have the discipline to save for retirement and discouraging it for THAT reason is wise. But, I AM very disciplined and once this debt is paid off would rebuild my 401K. Factoring in my commitment to rebuild the 401K, why should'nt I reduce my debt now by using that money and re-build later?

Hi! I start my first real job since graduating college on Tuesday! I've had many jobs before, but this is the start of a career and I need to dress appropriately because it's important to me to look professional. I own very few office-appropriate outfits (only enough for interviews) and I need to stock up on dress pants and button down shirts for work.
My question is, how bad would it be to sign up for a store credit card at Banana Republic or Express in order to pay for all the clothes that I need? I don't plan on spending so much that I won't be able to pay it off when I get my first paycheck. Do you think that opening a credit card and then immediately paying off the balance when I receive the bill would look bad for me, or help build credit? When I do pay it off, should I just hold on to the credit card or close the account?
Or should I avoid the credit cards in general? I'm sure my parents or my boyfriend would loan me some money since I really do need the work apparel.
Thanks!!

I make $45K gross, take home $32K net, and we are struggling with bills, and can't save enough for a house fast enough.

Can you imagine how people working for $8-$12 an hour are doing? What about people making $12-$16 per hour?

I have to assume that 3/4 of The USA makes less than $20 or so per hour, and have no clue how much the pay ranges are above us! I'm not the only one struggling either at $45K, I asked some co-workers (who make MORE than I do!) about their income and expenses, I was AMAZED that I am not alone!

So, my QUESTION IS:

How does the "average" USA Citizen make it?
What are your ways of being frugal?
Also, if you want to answer, what gross pay range is considered "middle class"?

Any answers to this whole topic of "low income" are welcome!
