I am divorced and started in debt from that point about 7 years ago. I have tried to survive on my own in a high housing cost city and it has just gotten worse. My student loan interest is capitalizing because I'm already on a low monthly payment for that (not in default though).

I am at the point where I am having to charge groceries and gas and if it continues I won't be able to pay minimums on credit cards over time.

I earn about $55,000 but because of where I live, half my monthly take home pay goes to my rent.

I am trying to get rid of most of my possessions so the next time my lease ends, I can try to find a basement to live out of to cut housing costs.

In the meantime, I am wondering if I should just declare bankruptcy. I can't afford to pay an attorney. Would an attorney even talk to me? I am just not sure what I should do besides giving up, quitting my current job, and moving in with my parents and trying to find a job where they live. I also have a part-time job.

My debt to income is low and I have a 700+ Fico. I plan on using it for car repairs and a few other expenses....

Will the amount they lend be based on ther purpose as well or should I state that I'm using it for something else in order to get the funds I need?

Is a 65 year old woman (retired) with only social security income and a small IRA considered 'judgement proof'? Does not own a home, very minimal checking, one old car. From what I can tell IRAs are protected against judgement in Nevada as well as social security income. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I have educated myself with a lot of information on investing, retirement planning, and income growth since I've graduated from college and started working in the real world. I have conveyed this information to my dad and he seemed interested. He didn't have the luxury that I have in planning for his financial future because he was too busy working hard to raise and support the family. All he did was save money in a bank account and possibly opened a few CDS. He is currently 52 years and will be retiring around 60+. I would like to help him out by setting up a retirement account for him. I have considered a Traditional IRA and/or a Roth IRA, but I was wondering if there were any alternative options. Right now, I am strongly leaning towards an IRA and will need to determine the most conservative approach for him in terms of growth, risk, and his age. Any help or suggestion would be much appreciated?

I'm in California and am looking for a lender that can finance a $6-$8,000 personal loan to pay off some debts. I have a decent paying job, and am willing to pay a larger interest rate. I have tried credit.com, AIG, among others suggested on this site. Has anyone found a new lender?

They keep claiming it is to "lock in" our interest rate. What does this mean? Application fee? Does it go towards closing costs? What happens if we decide not to go with them?
