Chain mail is actually a very old form of fraud. The typical thing would be a young girl just entering puberty, who suddenly finds she has enough addresses in her address book to start a chain. She writes to five or six people, telling them to list their names at the bottom and take the senders name off the top, and mail it to six other people. Sometimes people were told to send a dollar to each person on the list, sometimes not. The idea was that the letter spread outward very quickly from a center. It might have a financial (the dollar) reason, or a political or religious one. In that case, they did not ask you to send money, but to "believe" and pass it on. You were effectively adding your endorsement to the statement of the letter in sending it on.

Back when these were done in handwriting by people who could not really do all that many, or even typing on a conventional typewriter, they were not a big deal. But now, with email making it easy and free, they are all over. The "send it to the people you love" routine has the same effect of having you endorse the statement involved. Maybe it's just some sloppy sentimentality about friendship, but the effect is still to have you send someone else's words as if they were your own to your friends.
