The only web site that offers a truly free credit report, via US legislation, is the one listed below. All others are commercial sites that require credit card numbers, cash or some other form of payment. Even though the others are entitled "free", they often limit their service to you also agreeing to pay for some other form of credit reporting, at a considerable price.

Everyone is allowed to view all 3 credit reports for FREE once a year. After that, you have the chance to view it again if you are ever turned down for any type of credit - anywhere (car, credit card, etc.) Simply request a copy of your credit report (if it was ran) at the time your application is rejected. They are obligated to show it to you. I also strongly suggest going on the the Equifax web site. They have tons of helpful (easy to understand) information that can help you with ALL aspects of learning more about your credit reports. For a small monthly fee (I believe $6.95 a month) you have access to your credit report every single day and they will immediately notify you of any transactions on your report via e-mail. Pretty cool stuff. I did that for a few months to get my report in perfect order and raised my FICO scores considerably. It was well worth the few dollars. You could join it for a couple months, work on your credit and then cancel. You should check it out. It helped me learn a lot!!

You are entitled to see your report and you can get a free copy simply by filling out a credit application somewhere. Once the report is filed you can get a copy from the reporting agencies. I see a lot of disadvantages to this- (like letting them know where I live)- but that's how it works. ALWAYS take the disability insurance option. Good luck.

Here are a couple of websites to obtain a free credit report. I've never used them, by I noticed them while searching the web:

http://www.free3bureaucreditreport.com/?sid1=YF102

http://www.freecreditreport.com/Default.aspx?SiteVersionID=418&SiteID=100133&sc=643700&bcd=em02&WT.srch=1

If you were recently declined for credit and know the date your credit report was pulled, you can go on each of the repositories websites and get a copy (you are entitled to one free copy per year). The websites are:

http://www.experian.com/

http://www.transunion.com/
