Since my father has become ill we have set up a joint bank account with both our names so that I can help manage his finances. Can my own account be affected by any problems or issues that may result from the joint account with my father?

yes. if he owes money you do not know about they can come after you sometimes. check with the laws of your state. if you have power of atty you can do the same thing without all the legal liability. go to www.findlaw.com to learn more. www.firstgov.gov and ask there too.
