Why would you ever, besides an emergency, spend more money than you make?

I'm in my mid 30's, working two part time jobs, no children. I haven't had insurance or a retirement plan since 2000. I have mental limitations that make it hard to get a good job. I wonder what I'll do when I can't support myself any more. I really have no idea.

Does it really make your credit score go up if you pay off a credit card and close it? If so, how many points does it go up and does it matter how long you have had the card?

Have you made a strong effort to invest for your retirement, or are you living just for today? I've been saving the max in my companies 401K for 20 years (at the moment I am unemployed) and I've been putting money into an IRA and a few other investments just for my retirement. Yet so many of my friends say they have not because they can't afford it. I say you can't afford not to. I was just wondering how many people actually think about it.

I've heard that if I ask a bill collector (collection agency) not to call me by phone that they have to obey and not call me again. Is this true? I have a really nasty collector that calls EVERY DAY, sometimes more than once a day! I have asked them repeatedly to contact me by mail only and they are just the rudest and most harrassing people I have ever dealt with. They say that until the bill is paid in full they can call me as much as they want. And they do - all day, every day.

Is there any legal remedy? I am willing to pay a lawyer to write them a cease and dissist letter but I need to have a law to cite in it. PLEASE help!

Are banks outside the US as safe as US banks? In the US, banks are FDIC insured. Are there other countries that have vefry safe banks. How hard is it for a US Citizen to open an account there and transfer funds to the non-US new account?

We all want cash, and lots of it. But is there some amount that would do us more harm than good? If you were to get one check per year (guaranteed) for the rest of your life. How much would the check be for? Based on my calculations if I stayed single, and had just one girlfriend and a few friends my safe zone would be under $200,00 per year. That's probably too high! In a few years I might be less happy than I am now although I feel financially miserable right now. Count your blessings!
