I am in a huge mess with credit card debt. I seemed to have made a huge mistake by helping others in their time of need by using my credit card for their benefit. I was promised to be paid back the money used but I got stuck with the bills and got nothing. I am in desperate need to pay off my debt really fast, but I don't make enough money to pay it off so soon. If there is another way to pay it off without all the hassle, I will do anything possible to get this fix.

My father gave me a cashier's check from Chase bank, which is his bank, to cash and start getting things for my wedding. It was purchased yesterday, and today, I go to cash it, but I can't.

They say that the check is "still pending." How is that possible... especially if you have the money to purchase the cashier's check? Wouldn't that money be readily available?

A car dealer told me if I want to hurry up and pay a car off, he told me to make a car payment. If I have extra money hanging on the side make a car payment with that as well. He told me to make the extra money car payment out for "Principal Only" so I can pay off the finance interest on the car quicker. Will this lower the monthly car payment or will I still have the expensive monthly car payment amount?

with out my spouse finding out? We have a joint checking account and she keeps up w/ it. She knows when I get paid and always looks at my check stubs. She is a lot more tighter than I am when it comes to money. I don't want to argue over money but I need a little of my own to have if I feel the need to spend some. I don't want to argue over the check stub either. I would apprieate some help. Serious answers only please because the only thing we fight over is money and I know if she knew I wanted to save just a little a week just for me she'd have a fit. Thank you in advance for you help.

I worked at United Technologies Inc. from 1972 to 1976 and contributed to a retirement plan. UTI closed the facility in Bennettsvile, South Carolina in 1996 but I've never received any information about my plan contribution. I am now 63 and was wondering what happened to the money I contributed. Any suggestions on how to contact the fund holder?

I currently own my own home, but recently inherited property and I have the opportunity to sell my current home and use the equity to put a house on the new property.
Within this opportunity I have two options. I can use all of the equity from the sale of my current house to build a new house on the property, which means I will have no mortgage payment (but I may not have the space I need for my family) or I can build the house of my dreams but I will end up financing a small balance. Either of these options would be very beneficial to my current expense and debt problems.
Here are the catches: The property I inherited is in a much lower income community than me and my family are used to (I am concerned about raising my kids there). The property has been in my family for quite some time and my family would not appreciate it if later down the road I decide to sell it (so what ever decision I make will be permanent).
What would you do and why? And additional suggestions are welcome.

My share of an inheritance from my mom will be $135,000. Her financial advisor says that if paid to me in a lump sum, about $50-55,000 will be taxable as ordinary income.

I took a 2nd mortgage last year on my house to buy a vacation home that needs some work in order to be usable for myself and as a seasonal rental. I owe $95,000 on the 6.5% loan; repairs and upgrades will run about $35,000. Getting this house in order is a top priority. I hope to retire next year, and planned to sell the main house, using the profit to pay off the vacation house loan and pay cash for a retirement place. I would continue to own two houses.

Question: What is the best strategy to use this inheritance? Take the tax hit and pay off the vacation house loan and repairs? Keep the loan, pay for the repairs, invest the rest, and pay off the loan next year with the sale of the main house? Other, better ideas?

I paid my cable bill, but I paid too much because I wasn't sure of the amount of my bill. The check I wrote them was returned due to a bank error. (my direct deposit wasn't in my account when it should have been) I wrote the check out for $200 and I found out last night when I called the cable company that my bill was only for like $150 plus a $25 check charge. I got $200 dollars out of my account and went to pay it. The clerk at the cable company told me that I owed $225 because I wrote the check out for $200. I simply explained to her that I wasn't sure of how much my bill was and I just wrote it over to compensate. She said that because my returned check was written out for $200, that I had to pay the $200 plus the returned check fee, even though my bill was only for $150 plus the check charge. Is something wrong with this?

If I give someone my account number and routing number and the name of my bank, could they wire money directly into my account somehow? Is it possible? I am trying to sell something via online auction and need the money tonight but all the merchant services need either account verification (takes up to four days) or have a three day transition period transferring the funds to your actual bank account.

If someone had my account number and routing number they would not be able to withdraw but only deposit right? So would this work, just giving it to them for a direct wire the moment they buy the item? I'm selling on eBay and would of course warn them this is the method of payment beforehand.

Thanks for the answer to what seems like an obvious question. I'm just a bit ignorant on this one....
