She should alert all 3 credit agencies- Equifax, etc. that there is a possibility that their identity has been compromised. You are allowed one free credit report a year- take advantage of that. They should also contact their bank to open a new account and let them them know the reasons why. They can put an alert on the account in case someone tries to use their identity. Alerts should be put on all accounts- bank, savings and credit card.

No there isn't. I use experian.com. It is a protection provided by one of the 3 credit reporting companies. It is free for 30 days, then $9.95 a month after that. What it does is notify you via email any time anyone has accessed your credit report. It will tell you who requested the credit report and the reason for it. It will tell you if there has been something posted to your credit in a negative way, so you can call the company if you forgot or the check did not arrive. It will tell you if there is a new account opened, also. If you get an email and you have not submitted for the request, you can take immediate action to stop it. the email is sent the day the request is made, so it is very fast response time. They will also help you in this event. For me the peace of mind is worth it. I hope this helps.

Your friend would have to make several phone calls including the bank -have all accounts frozen so no withdrawls can be made. Call the credit card companies and have your cards reported stolen and frozen too. Go in person to your local Social Security office to have your number reported too to prevent identity theft.

Yes. Write the three credit bureaus and ask them to put a fraud alert on your record due to stolen or lost identity papers. This way, any application for credit in her name will be referred to her before any action is done.

Done this. It works.

call the credit card companies and alert them... just explain the situation. also maybe call the police department and check his credit report as well to make sure no unauthorized activity is going on. the local police department may be able to give identity theft information and be able to tell you what to do
