My father gave me a cashier's check from Chase bank, which is his bank, to cash and start getting things for my wedding. It was purchased yesterday, and today, I go to cash it, but I can't.
They say that the check is "still pending." How is that possible... especially if you have the money to purchase the cashier's check? Wouldn't that money be readily available?

I went to the Chase bank near my work, which isn't the one that my father got the money from, but any Chase bank should cash it, right?
I understand fraudulent protection, but this is a valid check! This is becoming ridiculous!

All checks over a certain amount determined by the bank is subject to a hold. There are a lot of people doing bad things and banks are taking extra steps to protect themselves from fraudulent checks. Do you have a chase bank by you? They will cash it because they know the funds are available, otherwise you'll just have to wait until your bank clears it.

I deposited a cashier's check in in the amount of $ 95,000 issued by BoA and Chase wants to hold the funds for almost 2 weeks. So it looks like in these days someone who does not have that much time has to go the BoA, get $ 95,000.- in cash (at least 950 bills since the largest bill in the US is still $ 100,- ) and hand these 950 bills over to the Chase cashier. Ridiculous, but it looks like that's what the banks want you to do. I am sure it will ring all kind of bells at the FBI, the CIA and the NSA ....

I agree with Bella.
For example: You have $100 on deposit with your bank (not Chase) and you want to cash a check drawn on Chase for $200. The bank will not give you that much cash because the check might be forged.
If it were me I would deposit the check into my bank account, wait a couple of days and then withdraw the cash. Chase will probably cash it, but they might give you a hard time or charge a fee if you are not already a customer.

I wouldn't cash it. I would just deposit it and wait a day or 2 for the funds to clear so that you can start using the money for the things you need for your wedding. How exciting is that!!!!
When I got married in 2001, my mom and dad blessed us with a check for $10,000 to pay for the wedding and to start life off with a little more in the bank than they did when they got married. We just deposited the check and let it clear and never had a problem.
If you still have trouble, you can call your dad and ask him to get involved and find out why there is a problem. Large amounts of money may be subject to a hold for protection. As annoying as this can be at times understand that it really is for your protection as well as theirs.
