What are all the things you need to do to ensure the water looks smooth and velvety?

In the early daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, and ferrotypes (daguerreotypes only had a few seconds of exposure, so they probably weren't frowning because of the long exposure time), in the portraits everyone is always stern-looking, not frowning but certainly not happy-looking. These days it's nearly the polar opposite: even if someone is having a terrible day, they'll unusually still smile in a picture. So, when did people start habitually smiling in photographs, and do you have any clue why?

P.S. I originally posted this in the Society and Culture section, but all I got was a dumb girl telling me it was exposure time. I already said that after the camera was set up, exposure was only a few seconds. Besides, these days professional portraits take a long time, but people still smile. So don't anyone tell me no one smiled in old photos simply because the exposure times were long.

I want to find a site similar to Photobucket that will allow nudity and what they and most other consider pornographic content for my personal use and that will allow me a "somewhat" private way of storing my own personal pictures. I say 'somewhat' because at Photobucket I stored some pics of myself and even though my account was set as private, they deleted all of my pictures.

Hi. I want to transfer all my family's old photos to new albums, but for cheap. Muji has a cool system but nowhere on the packaging or website does it advertise the material in their albums as archival. If anyone can tell me I would appreciate it. Thank you.

I read an article recently that stated that many busy pros who sell a lot of photos shoot primarily in jpeg. The reasons given had to do with workflow and time constraints. I'm talking about people who sell to magazines, postcards, stock, websites, etc. It was stated that they (the pros in question) shoot raw only when they can see a need to be exceptionally careful. I'm an enthusiast-level photographer who is considering a photography sideline, selling stock shots, and maybe producing some scenery/ cityscape type stuff for the tourism industry, etc. (I travel a lot...) If I can shoot HQ jpeg instead of Raw, and reduce my time in front of the computer, I'd be a happy boy. Any thoughts?

I have just bought a Samsung NV10 and have a question.

I am trying to take long exposure night shots.
I am setting everything up manually but am suffering when it comes to focus.
The NV10 is autofocus and obviously when its dark it does not seem to focus correctly. would the AF light make things better.
With regards apperture I have the choice of two, 7.1 or 2.8. Which one would give me a greater depth of field.
Sorry to sound dumb, but I am trying to work my way upto a DSLR and want to know what I am doing, rather than rely on Auto functions.

hard to explain this, and hard for me to find it with google. But i have seen it done on the monday night football ads, where they have still shots and it seems like the camera is moving around the image and parts of the image are cutout and in front of the background.

Hope this helps and you can help me find how to try and do this trick.

I just received my senior portraits in the mail, but i only received 2 5x7's and would like to shrink them down to wallet size so I can trade portraits with friends. What place would allow me to copy, shrink, and print the portraits? I hear costco will do it..but i would like to make sure.

I bought a set of whats claimed to be IR Glasses, but it turns everything blue/purple. Even the lense says its UV 400.

No doubt, it doesn't let visible light through as it only permited a red LED on my microwave, but not the Green LED at the same brightness.

So, can some 1 tell me if this is IR or UV.

Descriptions:
When i look at a light bulb ( white-yellow to pink/purple)
Moon (White to blue purple)

Thanks

Does anyone still use color negative film? If so what application do you use it for? I shoot B&W and color transparency but have never used color negative so I was just curious. And please no "just get a digital camera" answers. :-)
