No, the majority of professional photographers are still self taught.

College courses or training with a pro both have pros and cons - you'll only get information as good as your tutor / syllabus and plenty of college lecturers are failed photographers (it will be controversial to say but it's simply the truth - though obviously it is not always the case by any means!).

I didn't go to college but I was lucky to get breaks fast and to build a network of excellent photographers I could run questions past... And I worked hard! Having a really good photographer you can run technical, business or creative issues past is really useful - a good pro will have all sorts of experience that is up-to-date and that will probably save you a lot of time and money.

BUT if you ask a bad one or one who has no experience in yoru area you could equally get bad advice, the same goes for colleges, it took plenty of them ages to get on top of digital and I think many are still on 'catch up'. I've had several students work with me on placement and found even final year students weren't aware of basics like exposure latitudes, the print window, or lighting ratios... to me this is shocking neglect of the basics.

The basics are always the most important items to learn and with them you can make and break the rules, having a good foundation to build your knowledge on. In this respect getting ahead on Photoshop and on basic shooting skills is the area that you should focus on... there is so much to learn that, if I was starting again, I'd definitely get myself into the best university course I could. Long term it could save a LOT of time and effort.

No, not in high school, but yes in college. If you want to do photography, then it would be good though. Take photography classes, they helped me so much. Learn about photoshop!

It'll probably be best. You'll get experience and while you're at it, you can make a picture portfolio of all your artwork. That was one of our assignments when I was in Art. We made a slideshow. It was fun in the long run. Take care.
