Why do most pictures of Johannes Brahms show him walking with a hedgehog?

I've seen them over and over, photos and profile pen and ink drawings.

The Vienna press made a caricature of him walking alongside a red hedgehog becasue he had a fond habit of visiting his favorite tavern called "The Red Hedgehog" on a daily basis.
