Has philosophy contributed anything to the world? Did it prove or disprove anything? Isn't it all rather a waste of time?

"I stick my finger into existence & it smells of nothin. Where am I? Wat is this thing called the world? Who is it tat has lured me into the thing & now leaves me here? Who am I? How did I get into the world? How did I get involved in this big enterprise called actuality? Why should I be involved? Isn't it a matter of choice? And if I am compelled to be involved, where is the manager - I have somethin to say abt this. Is there no manager? To whom shall I make my complaint?" - - -
"I am standin on the platform of the tram & I am entirely uncertain as to my place in this world, in this town, in my family. Not even approximately could I state wat claims I might justifiably advance in any direction. I am quite unable to defend the fact tat I am standin on this platform, holdin this strap, lettin myself be carried along by this tram & tat people are gettin out of the tram’s way or walkin along quietly or pausin in front of the shop windows. Not tat anyone asks me to, but tat is immaterial"

The U.S. savings rate is in the negatives. Also, many other European countries are not faring so well. The only countries that has a high savings rate is Singapore, China, Japan, and South Korea. What is wrong with us? Dont we realize social security and medicare is going to be gone? Are we all ignoring this?

I just had a thought that mankind could be considered socially evolved if we found a permanent alternative to war. I mean, if two nations are disputing the rights to some land or resource, why should the ability to kill and destroy decide the winner? There has to be a better way. I'm not smart enough to think of what that might be right now, but someone must be.

Philosopher Hume pointed out that we have no underlying ‘personal identity’ beneath or behind these perceptions and feelings which come and go.

Do you agree that when you look within yourself you do not observe a “self” in addition to the perceptions and feelings that you observe within yourself?

If you agree that you do not observe your “self” in this way, should you conclude (with Hume) that you do not have an underlying ‘personal identity’ but that you are simply the “stream” of perceptions and feelings that you observe within yourself?

Many(of course not all) have had some sort of mental illness....drugs,alcohol,depression,or all out madness.

Is that just one of life's little ironies...that the ones that can evoke such strong emotion, feelings, thoughts or what ever are also the ones living in chaos, despair and generally(not always) die an early or tragic death..or both?
