Many(of course not all) have had some sort of mental illness....drugs,alcohol,depression,or all out madness.

Is that just one of life's little ironies...that the ones that can evoke such strong emotion, feelings, thoughts or what ever are also the ones living in chaos, despair and generally(not always) die an early or tragic death..or both?

My guess is that yes, there is a connection. I know in my own experience that I do my best writing when I'm not on my anti-depressive medication. Unfortunately, I'm not able to function in society then.

The single most clear connection that I can give in response to this question is Drugs and Alcohol: Hashish and Absinthe.

The Green Fairie was a great motivator of madness.
Absinthe can be bought again, but it is not the same as it was in the 1800's.

Well, out of suffering comes the greatest art. Artists may be troubled. But because someone is having mental anxiety or psychological problems doesn't mean necessarily that they are insane. Artists are unusual people anyway and most times misunderstood.

They are not mentally ill, but emotionally ill.
Yes.
It is usually those that think and feel differently that go on to create things that others would never have visualised. Unfortunately, the very thing that fuels their creativity is also the very thing that claims their lives.

I believe you are right.
It is very interesting that there is such a fine line between genious and retatdation.
The Savants of the world amaze us with their paticular gift that they pocess, yet they can't function on the basic human level.

It is one of the mysteries of mankind.

I am pretty sure we all have reached an altered state of mind at least once in our life. Some who continue on with their self inflicted "altered state of mind" tend to be hazardous to themselves. It may be chaotic for those around them, but the ill effects are on those who cannot over-come the so called "madness."

Great artist are obsessive people. They are obsessed with their art. All their time, thought and effort is focused on it. This is what makes them great and also mentally ill.
