"Where does chocolate ice cream come from?" Well, you see, cows and milk and cocoa beans and factories and distribution... "No, no! Where does it really come from? Who conceived chocolate ice cream, who invented it? And where did that idea come from?" Well, you see, I've never learned who invented chocolate ice cream, and I certainly haven't asked him how he came up with it. "Yes, yes, but what do you believe was the case? Anyway, you can't be so closed-minded as to assume that he just came up with an idea, just like that!" Well.. if you put it like that, I guess I don't know. "Well, I can tell you. You see..."

According to many different schools of thought, some believe in life after death, while some don't believe in it. Overall, without the specific schools, it seems to me like an almost vacuous issue. We are currently in this body, with this mind, with these perceptions, with this state of understanding of the world, with a self-concept, and because our minds may be restless or wondering about big questions, we doubt the absolute reality of our present moment, which is perfect by itself, when the mind is not plagued by all kinds of questions and doubts (and even beliefs). Thus, my answer would be "probably, yes, I believe in it," but I don't see how it relates to reality or the confidence of our present being, which does not need any further definition or adjunctive conditions, because at the level of being, we always simply exist.

i was just talking to a friend about this recently. i have been raised to believe that there is a heaven and a hell and that all people will be placed in one or the other according to how they lived their lives. these people stay in heaven or hell for EVER. for all of eternity, as i've learned. this is too much for anyone to fathom, and i got to thinking, if we are still alive, in a sense, just somewhere else, isn't that almost the same as reincarnation? we go from being our human selves to another form of being. for me, it was just easier to think that people die and then are born again into this continuous life as someone else as opposed to dying and living in a (perhaps) disconnected world for the rest of eternity. so that's my take on things right now after some contemplating - i believe in life after death, in a sense.

Why does it have to be either-or?

check out Taoism... your body will go back where it came from, and your "mind" / spirit / soul, all that there was of you, is out there in the lives of other people. You are already immortal in that sense... any desire to live beyond death is fundamentally selfish, and you cannot live a fulfilled life while being selfishly dependent on your reward for being a "good boy or girl".

This is true regardless of what you believe.

Get out there and live, and stop worrying about dying, my friend!

peace

It's funny that all the religions want to provide a beginning and an end to the world, but can't come to grips with life ending-- oh no.. the show must go on!

The beginning never begins (or God comes from nowhere)
The end never ends

Pointless effort at explanation.
