Has philosophy contributed anything to the world? Did it prove or disprove anything? Isn't it all rather a waste of time?

Broader perspective for one thing.

Certainly philosophy has contributed to the world; our western civilization is based largely upon the philosophy of greek philosophers, for example.

Prove or disprove? It is not the purpose of philosophy to prove or disprove anything - that is the affair of science.

A waste of time? I suppose that depends on how you feel about thinking and the results of that thought. Thought (and often philosophy) results in positive or negative action. If thinking outside your own box isn't important to you then I suppose yes; a complete waste of time.
