When I try to define words, it seems that the process is interminable. I can never arrive at a satisfactory non-arbitrary definition for any term. Assume that I want to define the term "masculine." Would it be possible for me or is it possible for anyone to define "masculine" without being arbitrary. Think of Derrida here and the celebrated logocentrism of Platonic thought or the western "metaphysics of presence" that has pervaded human thought.

Certain philosophers say that math constructs like 2 + 2 = 4 or 50 + 50 = 100 are examples of self-evident truths. They are true in any possible world or any counterfactual situation. But I wonder if there is a counterfactual situation in which 50 + 50 does not = 100. Could such a counterfactual situation obtain?

We usually only believe in what we perceive, so if we're perceiving what someone ELSE has perceived, are we really getting a full understanding of the news? Or do you think it's full of biases, political influences, and geared by what is "popular" or "makes a good story"?

I have a 6 month old baby who I love more than anything on this earth & I am soo incredibly scared of leaving her without a mother. I am also scared of what happens after I go but I have only been given 6-12 months by my doctors. I'm not a religious person, how can I make peace with the fact that I have to leave this earth?

Otherwise, why would anyone fear death? After watching United 93 & watching people cling to one another, fearful of dying, of what comes next (& I would be exactly the same way!) I wondered if we all just thought a state just like pre-life existed, nothing but darkness, would we be as fearful? Isn't it fear that a hell might in fact exist that scares people into fervent prayer & horrendous fear when certain death looms? Even if you are a christian, how do you know you did it all right, that your heart was totally pure & you will for sure go to heaven? If there was no religion, do you think people would have more of a peace with the whole idea of death?

I want to believe in a God as much as the next person, it is depressing to think we just die and it all ends but I find it so very difficult to believe that your biological body can be disentigrated and some supernatural being inside of us still continues to feel and live on another realm. I'm not asking for the answer to all, just other opinions. And please no..."of course there is a soul, it says so in the bible" What does your deep gut feelings tell you???

In America I hear people often mistake the seperation of church and state as the sepration of ethics and state. People actually fear the legislation of morals, and most claim it is something relative that shouldn't be enforced on everyone. Government's purpose should and has been in the past to enforce good ethical behavior on its subjects.
