Is there any evidence or speculation that in the US Civil War there was a consipracy among Union Generals who were Democrats (McClellan, Meade, Burnside, etc.) to fight the war to a standstill instead of defeating the Confederate Army in order to disgrace, and ultimately defeat, Abraham Lincoln? If so, it would explain the inexcusable hesitations and lack of follow through that plagued the Union Army until U.S. Grant was appointed to command.
