Well. the great game was played out mainly in Afghanistan between the two imperial powers Britain and Russia. It was mostly clandestine and involved many individuals who would pay with their lives if they got it wrong. The originator of the phrase was beheaded in Bokhara in 1842 for spying. A possible thesis might involve why Britain and Russia so desperately wanted to avoid war at that time and in that area. Or, how both sides used the local tribes and chieftains to fight their battles for them.

Peter Hopkirk has written a series of accessible books on the politics and skullduggery on the frontier areas of British India. The first is called the Great Game, but they go up to the period of independence. One has one of my all time favourite book titles - On Secret Service East of Constantinople.
