no America has only ever won one foreign war without help, many of Americas greatest triumphs were only made possible because of foreigners (most of the scientists behind the moon landings were German, ex-Nazi scientists) and what great inventions have come out of America (the only one i can think of is the electric transistor). don't get me wrong America is a great country but proclaiming themselves the best is just ignorance, it may be the richest country but it also has the worlds largest balance of payments deficit ($805 billion, which is worth around 70% of americas GNP, i believe).

The best at what? We take home some gold at the Olympics but I do believe there are others out there that do as well. America is the land of the free and home of the brave, and we try to live up to that, only to be spit on everywhere. So for all the good that it does us here to give a helping hand to those less fortunate. But we still will, because we are the best in that way. If all those fool hearty folks that we helped in all those G-D forsaken places would just realize it is like peer pressure, they think they have to be better or live up to us. Well that would be a start if they would somehow learn to appreciate what they have and better themselves. like the ones that have no indoor plumbing? Or the fact that they starve their people, don't practice good medicine or hygiene. Start by cleaning up their water supplies, after all they cant all come here. It seems that is what is happening they leave there homes destroyed and come here and destroy. We didnt destroy anyone unless they came to hurt us first. Look how long it took us to enter in WWII? That should show you and look at Germany and Japan, we could have left them in the dust, but we built their whole country back up and we helped London, France, Italy etc., How about Afghanistan? We built them a soccer field and they used it to execute people. I think we are too good to others and we need to start being good to our own. Happy New Year.

The best. I usually don't judge people as a whole. I am American. I am not proud to be an American. I am not proud to be anything I am by acident of birth. I feel adventagous to be American. There is certaintly worse places to live. Better too. However, Sweden is more democratic, France has better health care, Japan better education, ect. I think overall we tend to have a selfish culture. I don't mean we are all selfish people, but our culture overall is. Look, Americans are like any other group of people, we got assholes and nice people. Some smart people, some idiots. Anyways, definatly long term programming.

The United States has been around for a measly 200 years. The Roman Republic was around for 500 years, and the western part of the Roman Empire was around for another 500, while the Eastern half went on for even longer than that. So compared to the Romans... no, we clearly aren't the longest living civilization. In terms of best government, that's for history to decide.

The best what? We certainly excel in many areas, and I love my Country. Sadly though, this country's history has many "black pages" you won't learn from any textbook.
The rest of the world certainly doesn't think so. An earlier answer mentioned the Roman Empire. They too thought they were "the best". They became arrogant, complacent, fat, and their leaders refused anyone's advice or dissention. Their military was spread thin to guard against the numerous "inssurrections" taking place, the Government was racked by scandals. In the end they fell victim to and were destryed by what they considered Barbarians, and it occurred within their very gates. Sound familiar?
This is why I love my country, in many ways, the best. But I fear my Government.

The US does have a semblance of being the best at everything. Judging from some answers here, it seems like most Americans agree with this. However, don't let nationalism cloud your judgement. Americans are not "the best"; i wonder why you would even post a question like this.
I'll tell you one thing, Americans do have THE best (inflated) ego ive ever seen.

Because the US is populated by immigrants from the whole world we have all skills and talents and culture of the world represented in our population. Being very big and very diverse makes us competitive in everything from sports to science, but particularly entertainment with universal appeal. It is ironic that the people who are most likely to claim the US is the best are also the ones most likely to want to limit new immigration.

Looking at some of the other answers to this question, and others like it, it really does surprise me when the Americans cant figure out why they are so hated.
