Is there any evidence or speculation that in the US Civil War there was a consipracy among Union Generals who were Democrats (McClellan, Meade, Burnside, etc.) to fight the war to a standstill instead of defeating the Confederate Army in order to disgrace, and ultimately defeat, Abraham Lincoln? If so, it would explain the inexcusable hesitations and lack of follow through that plagued the Union Army until U.S. Grant was appointed to command.

I dont believe there was a conspiracy among Northern Democrats with Lincoln . There was opposing sides on why we were fighting the war but they were mainly from the citizenry of the North. Lincoln did use political expediency for the Emancipation Proclamation and changing the outlook of the war but conspiracy among his generals is rather harsh. the inexcusable hesitations was because of their incompetency in figuring and miscalculating Confederate strength and their mode of operations. those generals above believed in the preservation of the Union but because of the Emancipation Proclamation and itsaftermath and the election of 1862 and 1864 a change had to be made and from a general who did not show political ambition and who would go for the end of slavery.

As in any situation there were plenty of conspiracies, plots and the like, however I have never seen or heard of anything along the lines of what you are implying. There were attempts to end the war by allowing us to go, cutting deals, treaties and legal actions but Lincoln did his own selections and had his finger in every pie this could not have taken place with his knowledge. Sorry.

God Bless You and Our Southern People.

There's a book called "Copperheads, The Rise and Fall of Lincoln's Opponents in the North " by Jennifer Weber & James McPherson that would probably enlighten you a lot on the subject. I have not read it, so I can't do so myself. It's on my book "wish list" though.
