In the 1950s, when countries were discussing wartime reparations to be paid by Axis powers, it was decided that Japan was not economically in a position to pay wartime reparations for war crimes committed by the Japanese Army during WWII.
Examples, The Rape of Nanking, the treatment of Allied POWs in South East Asia, and so on.
During the 1950s, Japan was definitely unable to offer reparations, Well, there is no contesting that Japan is now in a position to do so. Bear in mind that this question is not aimed at the current Japanese Government, but that Japan as a country should face up to its past. The Germans did so, and with no adverse effects.

On the eve of the New Year, RSS chief K S Sudarshan on Sunday spelt out his vision for India as a 'superpower'. The head priest of the saffron brigade says India can be transformed into a 'superpower by 2011' solely on the strength of its culture and philosophy, not on the basis of double-digit economic growth.

"People were turning to spiritualism and Indian philosophy as they had lost faith in everything else. The next five years would be very crucial for every Hindu to contribute towards this goal," Sudarshan told a seminar on 'Super Power India' in Bhubaneswar on Sunday.

"It is not far when the foreign policy, economic policy and internal security will be influenced by Indian philosophy or Hindutva and there are indications India would be transformed into a superpower by 2011," PTI quoted him as saying.

The RSS chief said a gulf existed between the words and work of political leaders and the rise in extremism and violence were causes for worry. "The implementation of the British form of democracy in the country has contributed to the divisions in the society," he said.

Sudarshan objected to the teaching of English to students at the primary level, saying it was adversely affecting the mindset of children
