As far as my history of art classes tought me the principal characteristic of the baroque was that there were no space for silence or emptyness.. the architecture and music, for example was all filled with sculptures and notes, basically cause back in those days the people was somehow worried and afraid of facing a new reality in their society.

now, its very obvious that today we are filled with information, advertising, news, internet.. everything is information and there is no space for silence or emptyness, our lives are crowded and we dont want to face ourselves.

for what I know, the main similarities between the baroque and today its the excess of everything and the nothingness of nothing.
