Fire and the wheel have to top the list...

Even though they were discovered in prehistoric times, just think of all the things wll still use today that involve fire and wheels.

Do you think, the ONE discovery can be chosen from the whole mass? The TEN, maybe.
I thought now, that the most part of significant discoveries was made during the last 1000 years. But most of them were _rediscoveries_.

Mr. G is correct in my opinion, in more modern times which still evolve from the fire and wheel is the manufacture of steel, glass and electronic's. I think some of the greatest is yet to come. So much is yet to come in health, energy and a smorgasbord of things, I think we in for a cataclysum of things to come.

gene technology

I know it might sound a bit weird, but also, I think that it is an important discovery in the development of our world. and, it holds many answers to so many diseases, that we might some day soon be able to cure, I'm sorry if this all came out as rubbish, but I really can't explain it any further, because I can't speak english that well. (it isn't my native tongue)
Anyway, it was just one of those weird thoughts, spinning 'round in your head that you can't really put to words.

My physics teacher in High School answered this with the following. Fire, the wheel,the lever, the block and tackle, the torque, and the pulley. Every other invention comes from them.

The wheel--invented by the Mesopotamians (I'm Assyrian!). The wheel greatly influenced society today, if it wasn't for the Mesopotamians cars, planes, and boats would not be in existence.
