Television was not invented by a single person, but by the contributions of several individuals. The origins of what would become today's television system can be traced back to the discovery of the photoconductivity of the element selenium by Willoughby Smith in 1873 followed by the work on the telectroscope and the invention of the scanning disk by Paul Nipkow in 1884. Electromechanical techniques were developed from the 1900s into the 1920s, progressing from the transmission of still photographs, to live still duotone images, to moving duotone or silhouette images, with each step increasing the sensitivity and speed of the scanning photoelectric cell. John Logie Baird gave the world's first public demonstration of a working television system that transmitted live moving images with tone graduation (grayscale) on 26 January 1926 at his laboratory in London, and built a complete experimental broadcast system around his technology. Baird further demonstrated the world's first color television transmission on 3 July 1928. Other prominent developers of mechanical television included Charles Francis Jenkins, who demonstrated a primitive television system in 1923, Frank Conrad who demonstrated a movie-film-to-television converter at Westinghouse in 1928, and Frank Gray and Herbert E. Ives at Bell Labs who demonstrated wired long-distance television in 1927 and two-way television in 1930.

I'll bet that you think that Bell invented the phone, but it actually was an Italian, Marsini?? I think. If you watch Godfather III there is a scene where Michael Corleone receives an award named after the man from one of the gangsters, watch it, its in the beginning 1/3d of the movie. I believe a man by the name of Raytheon had a patent on the Tube, which enabled the signal to be seen, the computer concept is very old, in fact ancient, if you accept the reasoning that a computer is a mechanical device that does tasks repetitively, then it is a Greek inventor from Ancient greece who developed little machines driven by a mechanicism that we could call the first computer concepts. The early industrial age mills in england and the USA were driven by cards with holes punched in them that would run the Mill cycle. Your question begets a question, define computer.

Television wasn't invested all at once. It was developed over a number of years, and it was first being worked on in the 1930's. By the late 1940's it was available to households.

Now, when you say that TV is a household staple, you are referring to where? Like it or not, not everyone has a TV set, nor a computer, nor a cellphone, nor an iPod, nor, for that matter, indoor plumbing. So, I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but the second part of your question simply isn't relevant.

Invented ? That information is EASILY found online by typing in " year t.v. invented ". As far as when the t.v. became a household staple . . . I'd say clearly the 1950's decade. I was a little one in the 1950's and remember our and other neighborhood families having conversations of "Oh wow, guess what, we just got a t.v. ". Nice memories.
