The ancient Roman currency situation was thus:
Smallest coin was one UNCA
An UNCA was one twelfth of an old republican ounce
Two UNCA was one SEXTRANS
A SEXTRANS was one sixth of an old republican ounce
Three UNCA was one QUADRANTES (COPPER)
Four UNCA was one TRIMESES (COPPER)
Five UNCA was one QUINCUNX (COPPER)
Six UNCA was one SEMESIS (BRONZE)
Twelve UNCA or two SEMESIS was one *** (BRONZE)
An *** was twelve ounces or one pound
Originally it was one pound(12 Roman ounces) of bronze.

Then:
Two ASSES was one DUPONDIS (BRONZE)
Two DUPONDII was one SESTERCIS (BRONZE)
Two SESTERCII was one QUINARIUS (SILVER)
Two QUINARII was one DENARIUS (SILVER)
Twelve and a half DENARII was one QUINARIUS AUREAS
which was GOLD
Two QUINARIUS AUREAS or twenty five DENARII was on AUREAS which was GOLD

Four AUREII was one MINA (100 DENARII)
Sixty MINA was one TALENT (6,000 DENARII)
A TALENT was approximatley 58 pounds weight.

The regular wage for a labourer in the Empire's hayday was one DENARIUS a day. The army pay in the time of Augustus was 50 DENARII a year (plus food, clothing and lodgings) for a marine in the navy or a Pedite Militae( an infrantryman in a Pedite Cohort)
up to 3,750,000 DENARII a year for the PRAEFECTUS PRAETORIUS (the commander of the Patorian guard and nominal supreme commander) Although many times the troops recieved bonuses.
In the early republice they had a coin called a DOLDRUMS and the late empire they had a coin called a SOLDARUS which was gold. Later they had a LIBRA, meaning pound. In fact our currency sterling(old english) came from the LIBRA(POUNDS)
SOLDARUS(SHILLINGS) DENARII(PENCE)
Hope this helps.

Ancient Rome existed over a long time and had a large geographical extension; so there were a lot of currencies in existence locally and empire wide at several stages.
