I sometimes wonder in what ways we are really progressing as a species. Some are pretty clear, I see life-span estimates all the time, but I wonder if anyone has tried to measure the level of suffering we have inflicted on each other over time. For this question, we could say it's just war, murder, execution, one human killing another on purpose. I am generally curious about historical estimates of this type if anyone knows where to look for such information.

Why do black people still complain about slavery as if they were part of it? If you weren’t part of it shouldn’t you shut up about?

The months of the year all have Roman origins yet the days of the week are all named after Anglo Saxon, Danish or Germanic deities...(with the single exception of Saturday). Why aren't the days of the week named after Roman gods or Goddesses too? Why are one lot Roman and the other North European? Why not ALL Roman or all North European? Why the mix?

temporary basis. I understand congress is reluctant to grant extreme powers to a president because the next president, from an opposing party might use those powers in a way that congress did not intend? Does the fact that Bush is being granted powers that are being written into law mean that there will never be another president from an opposing party?

Who can forget such classics as "Germany has concluded a Non-Aggression Pact with Poland... We shall adhere to it unconditionally... we recognize Poland as the home of a great and nationally conscious people." and who can forget the timeless "Hence today I believe that I am acting in accordance with the will of the Almighty Creator: - by defending myself against the Jew, I am fighting for the work of the Lord” and of course "I have not sought war. To the contrary, I have done everything to avoid conflict. But I would forget my duty and my conscience if I were to do nothing in spite of the realization that a conflict had become unavoidable" and many many more, all your favourites will be on this CD.

This happens in The Lord of the Rings when Eomer and a company of men defeat and kill orcs and uruk-hai in Rohan. After that they burn the bodies in a great pile with one orc head speared on a stake. any ideas of this happening historically? especially in medieval times.
