Also, who, exactly who decided the new name would be MEXICO from that date on?

Mexico means "The place where the sun and the moon join" and it comes from the nahuatl ( an idian language) word Mexitli.

The word existed long before the spaniards came to Mexico.

The natives during the Mexican Revolution i'd imagine. My spanish teacher said the word Mexico was derived from the Aztec pronounciation of their race/culture.

That's a good question. After it's independence from Spain. Was the name adopted in the Plan of Iguala by Iturbide? I'll have to look this up.
