By 1893, the Hawaiian monarch (Liliuokalani) had lost effective power thanks to the "Bayonet Constitution" of 1887. She made moves to restore her power, and a group of business led by Sanford B. Dole and others, and supported by the U.S. navy, revolted, overthrew the queen, and declared a republic which governed until 1898, when prodded by the McKinley Administration, Congress voted by a large margin to annex Hawaii as a territory.
