Though both the conch and the Lord of the Flies are symbols in the book, they both differ or contradict. While the conch shows the ability people have to be civilized, the Lord of the Flies shows the ability of people to be uncivilized. In the book, the conch keeps the children in a running, cooperating environment while the Lord of the Flies (symbolizing the evil within humans) plays a part in the destruction of government. Evidently, the conch holds Democracy within it while the Lord of the Flies holds Dictatorship and Anarchy.

does this sound good? what else can i add? its about comparing the conch to the lord of the flies

please help me! thankss!

I have really started to enjoy the character and story but want to make sure that I read them in the order that makes the most sense. Also, any other book or author suggestions that the community has would be welcome. I love the fantasy genre and am just looking for a few more favorite authors.

This book was around back in the late 80's. It was part of a series in which there were, I want to say fruits and vegetables? and they wore hats. It was the kind of story that always had a moral at the end . I know these are some far sketched details but that is really all i can think of. There were certain characters and the only one i can remeber is one that was called Mr. Grouch or Mr. grumpy and he was purple. lol It was a small hard back book in different shapes and there were only a few cardboard pages. This is so frustrating to me because i can't think of the name of these series?! I am sorry for the bad details, but as i have said i am having a tough time remembering since i was all of 7 at the time. lol If anyone can think of any kind of books like this i would greatly appreciate it! thanx

I need help interpreting some Thoreau quotes from "Where I Lived and What I Lived For":

-"Pause! Avast! Why so seeming fast, but deadly slow?"

-"And we are enabled to apprehend at all what is sublime and noble only by the perpetual instilling and drenching of the reality that surrounds us."

-"Be it life or death, we crave only reality."

-"Shams and delusions are esteemed for soundless truths, while reality is fabulous."

I have an idea of what Thoreau means, but I am having trouble explaining it coherently. Could you please paraphrase the quotes for me?

the book is about honesty, a children's picture book with a chinese/asian setting. An emperor wants to find a bride and is looking for the most honest maiden in the kingdom. He gives all the ladies who show up a seed, not telling them what kind it is. He gives them a period of time to cultivate and care for the seed to become the most beautiful plant of them all. Whoever fulfills the task will become his bride. One young maiden who is very skilled with plants tries her best to care for the seed. Nothing grows. She is distraught when the time comes to bring their POT to the emperor when she has nothing to show him. She is the only one who was honest because the seed was ???. She is rewarded for her honesty. I remember the title is something like The Honest Pot, Honesty Pot...???? It is an Asian story/legend.
