I would recommend "Goodnight Mr Tom"
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Goodnight-Mister-Tom-Michelle-Magorian/dp/0141301449/sr=8-2/qid=1164028742/ref=pd_ka_2/203-9915083-6090310?ie=UTF8&s=books
It's a wonderful story about a special friendship between a young boy and a man old enough to be his grandfather. It has a historical setting (during the war) and the young boy has been evactuated from his home to the country. Your grandma might even remember times like this herself, and it might even prompt her to tell you a few of her own childhood stories.
Here's a synopsis:
The gruff and surly Mr Thomas Oakley is less than pleased when he is landed with a scrawny little city boy as a guest, but because it is compulsory that each villager takes in an evacuee he reluctantly agrees. It soon becomes obvious to Mister Tom that young Willie Beech is hiding something, and as the pair begin to form an unlikely bond and Willie grows in stature and in confidence he begins to forget the past. But then he has to return to war-torn London.

The James Herriott books are all wonderful and appeal to everyone.
He was a country Vet in England and he wrote very heartwarming stories about pets and their owners.
He had a sweet and kindly style of writing

Have you read The DaVinci Code yet? It's a real interesting mystery--even if you don't agree with the religious accusations, you learn about art, DaVinci and some interesting ideas about Christianity.
