I have really started to enjoy the character and story but want to make sure that I read them in the order that makes the most sense. Also, any other book or author suggestions that the community has would be welcome. I love the fantasy genre and am just looking for a few more favorite authors.

Motherbear is correct about the Drizzt timeline.

Other books:

Try the original Dragonlance series by Weiss and Hickman

Make sure to read the Salvatore books about Entreri and Jarlaxle
(my 2 favorite characters from the Drizzt universe) it continues the story of "the Shard".

Also I enjoy George R.R. Martin's "Song of Fire and Ice" series, but its much deeper than the Dark Elf stuff, less hardcore fantasy, more a political period piece. Still very good fantasy

Raymond Feist's "Serpentwar" series is good, but I didn't enjoy it as much as these others.

Of course you should read the mother of all fantasy, "The Lord of the Rings" if you haven't yet.

RE:
What order should R.A. Salvatore's Drizzt books be read in? I know that he has written several out of order.

Yup they got the chronology right. Almost. Although you can easily read Icewind Dale before anything else since it's the first series he wrote. Much more importantly, they forgot an entire series.

After Icewind Dale, before Paths of Darkness comes Legacy of the Drow.

The Legacy, Starless Night, Siege of Darkness, Passage to Dawn

Absolutely must read before Paths.

Steelgrave's recommendations were all quite good.

I'd also add Salvatore's Cleric Quintet. Introduced the dwarven Bouldershoulder brothers who see a fair amount of use in the Hunters Blades series although you don't really have to have read this prior to that.

Good Lord... that is a toughie... I'll try

Start with The Dark Elf Trilogy...
Homeland
Exile
Sojourn

Next (I think) is the Icewind Dale trilogy
The Crystal Shard
Streams of Silver
The Halfling's Gem

Then Paths of darkness...
The Silent Blade
The Spine of the World
Servant of the Shard
Sea of Swords

and Last The Hunter's Blades Trilogy
The Thousand Orcs
The Lone Drow
The Two Swords

I *might* have Icewind Dale and Paths of Darkness mixed up, but I don't think so...

never ever ever start with dark elf trilogy, those were written after the icewind dale trilogy. yes they are a prequel but not meant to be read first.
