As in, a book or movie character.

People enjoy watching House (the medical drama) because of the main character's cynical attitude. Then again, others like Smallville because of Clark's altruism.

In your opinion, then, what would make for a more interesting (but not cliched) character?

I have just bought this book today, finally resolving to read it though over the past five years I've seen it in any bookstore at any given time. Is it really that good or just hyped? If you have read it, or like me have avoided it without real reason, please let me know what you think about it?
