If you've never read Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen, now is the time. It's one of the easiest of the classic novels to get into, it has a great romance at the heart and plenty of weird and wonderful people round the outside.

Give it a go - it's a great read and it'll impress the hell out of your parents and teachers if you've read it for fun.

I'm shocked that no one has suggested The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series, by Ann Brashares. If you haven't read it yet, please do. And don't let the movie influence you - as always, the book is much better.

Try A Great and Terrible Beauty, by Libba Bray. It's set in 1895 and it's a supernatural mystery romance-ish sort of thing. Very good.

Go back a few years, and try the Anne of Green Gables books, by L.M. Montgomery. In this case, the first movie is fairly true to the story, and the actors were perfectly cast.

Another author from many years ago is Gene Stratton Porter. Try Freckles, and A Girl of the Limberlost.

Some more of my all time favorites books include:
To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee
Ender's Game, by Orson Scott Card (don't let the science fiction stop you - it's a great book)
The Last Unicorn, by Peter S. Beagle
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, by Douglas Adams
The Princess Bride, by William Goldman (another case where the movie was also very good)

Twilight by Stephenie Meyer and the sequel to it called NEW MOON.

The Uglies trilogy by Scott Westerfeld (Uglies; Pretties; Specials)

Hit the Road by Caroline B. Cooney

Just Listen by Sarah Dessen (Any Sarah Dessen book is great. I loved The Truth About Forever).

Joan Bauer is great. I loved HOPE WAS HERE. But Rules of the Road is a close second. :)

Sonya Sones is wonderful too. I loved WHAT MY MOTHER DOESN'T KNOW.

If you like a darker side of YA perhaps THE CANDY DARLINGS by Christine Walde. It is very good, but definitely not for everyone.

Also THE ROAD OF THE DEAD by Kevin Brooks is a murder mystery.

If you're willing to try something a bit more challenging, I agree with an earlier recommendation of Pride and Prejudice. The opening line of the novel sets the tone: "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife." Great line! I've attached a link to an on line version of the novel if you want to check it out before getting the book.

Hmm, how young are you? I really like the "Darkover" series by Marion Zimmer Bradley. In fact all of her stuff is really good. The Darkover books are about a planet in the future that has a mostly benevolent ruling caste of telepaths. There is lots of drama, adventure, romance, etc. She also wrote some fantastic Arthurian legend books i.e. Lady of Avalon

The Hunt Chronicles is a great book recommended to me by Amazon.com. Mystery. Two stories in one book. Good stuff.

If you are into murder/mystery type stories, you cannot go wrong with something written by Dean R. Koontz. He is one of the best of our times. Also check out books by Michael Connolly and James Patterson. Plenty of great reading with books from these 3 authors.

The book I enjoyed most this summer was "Bet Me" by Jennifer Crusie. It's a lighthearted, modern romance, and the author has a great ear for dialogue. You will fall in love with the characters. I'm 45, but my 19 year old daughter read it and it was her fave summer read, too!

I'd recommend the Tomorrow Series by John Marsden. He's an Australian author and he's awesome.

It's about some kids who go camping and when they come back their small country town has been taken over by invaders. Really good series.

I absolutely LOVE chick lit books, especially by Sophie Kinsella and Emily Giffin.

I find that Ms. Giffin's novels are more deep than the formers, but both are good.

"Something Borrowed" by Emily Giffin is most awesome.
