I have just bought this book today, finally resolving to read it though over the past five years I've seen it in any bookstore at any given time. Is it really that good or just hyped? If you have read it, or like me have avoided it without real reason, please let me know what you think about it?

I'll avoide the series for a while longer too, thanks for letting me know what to look out for!

Can't say I've avoided it, read it or otherwise. But having just read a couple of reviews I may be tempted. It sounds a little indulgent, in as much as the author appears to have tried to cover too many aspects and not concluded them all, but I should try to judge for myself.
One of the reviews said that it had been produced as a BBC miniseries (though it didn't say if it was produced under the same title). I will endeavor to avoid that!

My book group read it when it first came out, and we found a lot to discuss in it. To me, that's what makes a good book - when it provides food for thought. She's a good writer, and I liked the way her characters were interrelated. But, not everyone's taste is the same. Give it a try and see what you think!
