I would recommend something by Edgar Allan Poe, probably "The Pit and the Pendulum" which although only a short story is extremely disturbing. If you spend a little time finding out about Edgar Allan Poe, then it is not surprising that his stories are horrific - even his own death happened in bizarre circumstances.

If you want something a little more contemporary, I think 1984 by Orwell or Lord of he Flies by Golden are scary but probably not for the reasons you're looking for. For out and out terror, I guess Stephen King's IT is pretty hard to bear and even as an adult, I still shiver when I think of Pennywise.
Have fun !

Try anything by Stephen King! He's a really great author. Misery and It are two of my favorites. :)

Also, if you're a bit younger (in or almost in your teens), try Lois Duncan. She's a wonderful author as well; she actually wrote the book I Know What You Did Last Summer - which was made into a popular movie. That was a good book (different from the movie, too), and so were Don't Look Behind You, and Killing Mr. Griffin. Stranger With My Face was also excellent, and probably my favorite by Duncan.

Amityville Horror apparently scared a lot of people. I'd suggest you pick up some Stephen King or Dean Koontz. They both have many good scary books. Check them out at the library and pick whichever one seems the scariest for you.

I've found Stephen King to be more disgusting than scary. Go to the local bookstore and in the metaphysical section, they have a ton of ghost story compilations which are very creepy. Otherwise, check out the horror section and see what strikes your fancy. Anything involving clowns or dolls is guaranteed to be scary.

Phantoms by Dean Koontz scared the heck out of me the first time I read it.

Also, try reading books and stories by H.P. Lovecraft. He wrote some creepy stuff.

Robert R. McCammon writes some good horror novels as well.

"Salem's Lot" by Stephen King. I remember reading it on a blazing hot summer's day in Edinburgh's Botanic Gardens. It was so scary that I felt chilled and too scared to turn the page at one point.

Pop along to www.gutenberg.com and pick up a few of the ghost stories of M.R James.

I first read them when I was 35 and was too scared to go to bed. They're only short but half a dozen of them and you'll be sleeping with the light on too.

Try "Oh Whistle and I'll Come to you, My Lad" or "Lost Hearts."
