Lincoln and the people of the North stated that secession was "illegal" and "unconstitutional," and maintained that because of this the Southern states had never left the Union, even though they seceded. People from the North to this day still say that's the case, that secession was illegal and that the Southern states never left the Union. If that's true, then why did the Federal government under Andrew Johnson require each of the Southern states to be "re-admitted" to the Union before they could once again have a representative in Congress and receive federal assistance? Other than the Federal troops being used to occupy the South during Reconstruction, that is.

So why did the South have to be "re-admitted" to something it never left?

My fourth grade teacher read this particular book to us and I don't remember very much about it...but maybe someone can point me in the right direction. I remember it had two boys in it and there was some way that they could gain access to another dimension or alternate reality...I want to say the 4th dimension or something like that. It's been so long (I'm 28 and was 10 when it was read to me). I would love to find this book again and appreciate any help finding it. I also think the cover may have had the face of a boy right side up and upside down. Sound familiar to anyone?

I visited Paris about 7 years ago and over the years, I've avoided organizing all my pictures and labeling them because of a lack of time. Well, today, I've dragged all those pictures out and I'm trying to remember what the pictures are of. The pictures I'm particularly trying to figure out are paintings and sculptures from the Louvre. One is of a naked statue. It looks like Michelangelo's David statue, but I'm not positive. It has a woman next to it. Does anyone have a clue?

Times like this is when I wished I would have read the information about the painting or statue next to it. Just my luck, this is probably the most popular statue known. Of course, I wouldn't know that... I'm not too smart when it comes to art. :o

I'm looking for a book that sounds like the author was high when he wrote it, and it doesn't make sense at all, but it still kept interest.

If a family member (father) was once an active freemason, has been awarded for 50 years of membership, but not necessarily active fpr quite a few years, and when the inevitable happens and he passes, do we contact the Masons to be a part of the funeral service, or do they, once they are aware, contact us? What are the "rules" when it comes to other family members that may protest at the presence of Masons?

I've been to only one funeral service "led" by Masons. I am not knowledgable of these things, but know that one day we will be faced with knowing the proper procedure. Any comments or advice will be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

One of the world's great treasure houses of art is concentrated at the Louvre in Paris. The curators want to build a branch in the Gulf. If this goes forward, where will it end? More branches all over the world? Should art be concentrated in one place where people from all over the world can come and enjoy it, while knowing that it receiving the best of care? Or should it be spread around so that people who may never visit Paris will have access to it? (A cynical note: How much has the immense wealth of the Gulf sheikdom influenced the choice of site? I don't see any plans to bring the art of the Louvre to, let's say, Haiti.)
