I like suspenseful (not scary/horror) books like The DaVinci Code, and Angels and Demons that are easy reads and keep you from wanting to put the book down. Also a huge fan of the Harry Potter series. Not really into sad or romantic storylines by authors like NIcholas Sparks, etc. I would appreciate any recommendations and some sort of explanation why you liked the book(s) or a short summary of what the book's about. Thanks!

I enjoy Russian literature and history and have come accross numerous allusions to nihilist philosophy. Did nihilism ever pose a real threat to social / intellectual society in Russia (or anywhere else), and why was it looked on so negatively?

Is there a significant nihilst population today?

yesterday i was watching planet earth (started at 22:00 on bbc4 if anyone else watched it) and theres this type of bug (cant remember what its called) but anyway, every 17 years, millions and millions of them come out from under the ground and fly around this forest. theyre kinda dumb and loads of them die and get eaten. if theyre lucky they mate, then after 36 hours they die, only for their babies to reappear another 17 years later! DOESNT THIS MAKE LIFE SEEM SO POINTLESS?!!! they just live for one and a half days then die. must suck to be one of those flies!

Destinies Battle

Darkness came, and daylight wept
Promises I could have kept
Are hollow lies inside of me
That fill my heart, but not with glee
This I know, all too well
Life can be a living Hell
Death will come for all who wait
Death will come for all but hate
Time stands still and life drags on
And then one day your life is gone
But still you ponder as you say
Could I have lived life a different way

Light has come and night has fled
A joyous clearing of my head
Wondrous melodies fill my heart
From which I hope to never part
Life’s Golden Gate I now can see
Opening in front of me
Has fate found us? I couldn’t say
I wouldn’t care to ask any way
Time moves on, as in times past
Time moves on, but not too fast
And now I know life should be spent
With truth and love, not contempt

this was the second one I wrote.. i'll post 2 or 3 more then i'll leave you guys alone for a bit :P

Loves Alibi

I know now what I always knew
I see now that my wisdom’s true
I tried to fight it, but I lied
And hid beneath my alibi
Time has found me, or is it gone
Even time needs a place to belong
And now I sigh, and praise a name
Knowing I have but myself to blame
Perhaps one day my strength will be true
Until then, I’ll say adieu
And forget the world I once would say
I don’t belong there anyway
Time has come, my life is here
As I wish for love to draw me near
One golden day, will I find
Yet another of my kind
Or will I wait for another dream
And live my life to a modest theme
For wisdom’s come and truth has went
And patience has been all but spent
In time I hope to no longer lie
And hide beneath loves alibi

I recently started researching young earth creationism (as in Genesis) and came across Francis Collins book, __The_Language_of_God, where he lays out an outstanding case for Theistic Evolution. This coupled with similar views of one of my all time favorite authors, C. S. Lewis, has left me on the fence for this issue. Leave some suggested readings with your answers. Thanks!

Having finished the seven books, I was looking for similar material. Would the Space Trilogy (also by lewis) be a good pick ? It doesn't need christian allegories, since I'm not christian or believe in god at all. Or can you give other hints ? Thanks !

The Unwelcome Wait

As the waves cascade, on the rivers bend
So to do the trials of my life come and end
A haunting dream of visions past
Have opened another door at last
The Buddha's smile, the cigar's smell
Deliverance from our personal Hell
I roused myself from daily doubt
That perhaps my life would be without
The one True door I've searched to find
Knowing that door was never mine
But on I've searched, often dreaming
Plotting, planning even scheming
To steal this port of my hearts content
Never housing plans for repent
For the path now walked is mine I say
I've paid my debt in many a way
Yet still I walk, though I may pretend
As the waves cascade on the rivers bend

The Wright brothers were credited with the first manned flight yet a preacher in Texas had accomplished it almost a year before they did.

What other things did people get credit for because they got bigger press than the previous inventors?
