I recently started researching young earth creationism (as in Genesis) and came across Francis Collins book, __The_Language_of_God, where he lays out an outstanding case for Theistic Evolution. This coupled with similar views of one of my all time favorite authors, C. S. Lewis, has left me on the fence for this issue. Leave some suggested readings with your answers. Thanks!

I do realize that almost every word in my question is loaded with semantic baggage. However, I’ve enjoyed the wide spectrum of responses, so I do not wish to clarify my question any further.

I’m always impressed with the caliber of the responses and appreciate the time of such learned people.

I would say YES.

Here are a few that support this view:
1. Theodosius Dobzhansky (Russian Orthodox priest)..."Nothing in Biology Makes Sense Except in the Light of Evolution.

2. Pierre Teilhard de Chardin is taught in a number of seminaries as an advocate of incorporating evolution into Christian theology.

3. Kenneth Miller, Finding Darwin's God

4. St. Augustine (of Hippo)

...i too have wrestled with this issue. as i also hold Lewis in very high esteem I've found it hard to dismiss this and other elements of his logic that at first seemed a little off, though I've yet to make up my mind. good luck on your journey!

No way. How could you account for the transitions from something like Australopithecus, a quasi-bipedal early hominid, to modern day human? There are so many transition fossils that the place where "human" begins is nearly impossible to determine (it depends on what you consider human).

The only theory that really fits your question would be the "hands off" theory of a supernatural being creating the beginning of everything and simply letting things evolve. If you try to approach this from a Biblical standpoint, though, the argument is logically doomed. How would you account for Homo neadratalensis, for example, who lived alongside modern human? Furthermore, would you place modern human at the pinnacle of this so called "plan," or would you at least allow that we are merely a link in the overall chain? Evolution is governed by simple rules, such as survival of the fittest and genetic mutation.

What, may I ask, keeps you from simply taking theism out of the equation altogether?

I can't suggest many readings outside of true anthropology. Any college level text will outline the hominid lineage for the last 7-10 million years.

Well, I'm not a christian, but my brother has a doctorate in theology and does believe in Christianity. He agrees with me on this issue. I think to try to add scientific proof to a religion based on faith is flawed, either you believe by faith or not at all. Most times theistic evolution is just away for Christians to have the best of both worlds. If your going to try to jump into making Christianity a "scientific fact" your getting in way over your head as science blows Christianity out of the water. However, if you want to believe it based solely on faith then science can't touch you. In the end is just a matter of belief

I haven't read much on the subject. I tend to support the 7 days in Genesis actually being 7 days. But I did find this book that gives you 3 different views.

Instantly created or slowly evolved? They seem to contridict eachother to me.
I know of a theory that follows evolution and employs creation of "consciousness" for humankind...
