Most lists are incomplete -- actually TWELVE of our Presidents achieved the rank of general, whether one star or five.

Here they are, grouped by rank:

GENERAL OF THE ARMY(IES)
- George Washington (5 star+ --officially the highest, never to be outranked)
- Dwight Eisenhower (5 star)
- Ulysses S. Grant (4 star)

MAJOR GENERAL (2 stars)
- Andrew Jackson
- William Harrison
- Zachary Taylor
- Rutherford B. Hayes
- James A Garfield

BRIGADIER GENERAL (1 star)
- Franklin Pierce
- Andrew Johnson
- Chester A. Arthur
- Benjamin Harrison

(You might want to check the Tyler/Taylor Presidents - one of them might have been - Teddy Roosevelt was a Colonel)
