Slavery was something that the first English settlers brought with them to this country. In the Constitution it evens deals with the issue of slavery, in a way. The framers of the Constitution believed that concessions on slavery were the price for the
support of southern delegates for a strong central government. They were convinced that if the Constitution restricted the slave trade, South Carolina and Georgia would refuse to join the Union.
Only the Southern states had large numbers of slaves. Counting them as part of the population would greatly increase the South's political power, but it would also mean paying higher taxes. This was a price the Southern states were willing to pay. They argued in favor of counting slaves. Northern states disagreed. The delegates compromised. Each slave would count as three-fifths of a person. (1)
The Migration or Importation of such Persons as any of the States now existing shall think proper to admit, shall not be prohibited by the Congress prior to the Year one thousand eight hundred and eight, but a Tax or duty may be imposed on such Importation, not exceeding ten dollars for each Person.
(section 9) site (2)
Slaves were not only black; native americans were enslaved as well as whites. It wasn't as common to see a white man enslaved, but they were...not in as great numbers as native americans or blacks.
Slavery became first a religious issue, then a political one...we all know the Civil War history, don't we?
As for the "democratic" thing, until slavery became a political issue, it didn't matter if you were a Whig, Democrat or what have you...it just wasn't an issue.

money, tradition(colonial ancestors, even Bible) the "founders" of the USA were the biggest slave holders (Jefferson 4 xmple). The mainstream ideology of the USA at that time was liberalism (classical lib.) not democracy.
Classical lib. (or pre-industrial liberalism) is not about equal voting rights, or full equality.Instead, class.lib. retains the power in the hand of the élite.
Oh, and ideology and practical use hardly ever finds a same route.
You say smtng, and do other.Dont have illusions about the pre dem. USA.
Anyway, that time the USA was far more the most democratic state in the world (with the UK).But not a true democratic one, as nowadays.
Look other countrys at that timescale. The tzarist Russia should give you some ideas.

Slavery in the United States started with whites , Indians and blacks ! Democracy supported slave owners but the I think it was the Quakers that started opposing slavery.
White slavery transitioned to indentured servitude, possibly because runaway whites blended into the population easier.
Note: there are still countries on earth using slave labor today !
Here is some US slave history on Wiki

In a nutshell: laborers were needed to perform the work on farms and cotton plantations throughout the colonies/states. Slaves were not considered to be human beings. They were property-no different from horses, mules, etc. It was capitalism in one of its worst applications.

That was then. This is now. It doesn't work to apply today's values to yesterday's fact situations. Just be happy that we are starting to get it right.

Because they were considered property, not humans. Thus, no vote.
Appalling, but true.
