I'm reading Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens...and he keeps saying "the parish authorities" What does he mean by parish? I looked up the word and the only thing that came up was something about religion and administrative subdivisions. Thanks in advance.

Or, do you prefer movies or books. I personally prefer books because they allow me to visualize the story for myself, rather than being subjected to another person's viewpoint. I will usually watch a movie after having read the book.

What is the best/most convincing/most interesting argument you've heard advocating either (or both) of the following positions:

(A) that a woman has the right to terminate her pregnancy, even if the fetus IS a human being from the moment of conception, or

(B) that a woman doesn't have the right to terminate her pregnancy, even if the fetus is NOT a human being from the moment of conception.

Judith Jarvis Thomson's argument is a notable example of (A)--the argument of Don Marquis a notable example of (B).

The condition to the argument is crucial. Posting "ABORTION IS MURDER, FETUS IS A PERSON, WHY DO LIBERALS HATE JESUS?" really doesn't answer the question and neither does "IT'S A WOMAN'S BODY, RIGHT TO CHOOSE, THE POPE'S A JERK."

Have fun. : )

Thought without logic can be tricky.
No beginning-to have a beginning means there was once 'nothing'. 'Nothing' is fine-'something' coming from nothing is not fine. (or it may be) . The other possibility is that 'something' has always been. This poses the obvious question- what can be without beginning or end? The answer is fairly simple- It is the ability to ask the question. What if, let's say, that 'nothing' can be without beginning or end. That is 'nothing' exists. 'Nothing' is the 'something' that has no beginning or end and the thing that has always been and is.So what is the 'something' that is 'nothing'?
"prove all things"- St Paul
"if you stare into the abyss too long, you will see it stare back into you"- can't remember who said that

Does anyone know where I can find the book? Writer's Digest and Barnes and Noble don't have it listed. I wondered if it's out-of-print. I can't even find it in my own library system. Any ideas?

I know that both forms of these kinds of poetry do rhyme with a rhyme scheme. But I wondered if it's considered to be metered.
