My late father-in-law was born in Scotland and died in s/africa in 1959. I have tried getting his birth certificate but no luck. He served in the first world war, but don't know with which regiment as he died in 1959 and my mother-in-law didn't know too many details. However looking in the churchyard of his alleged birth place there are plenty of graves with his surname. Dont know his parents or siblings names so cant find it on the census either. Do you know if the army would be able to help and if so how do I contact them? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

I believe the earliest example on a coin is 1474, but there may be earlier ones written on paper or parchment, carved in wood or stone, etc. As with the coin, the date may be self-explanatory as to when it was written.

It is better to be feared than loved. Love is preserved by an obligatory link which people may break and usually do whenever it is advantageous for them to do so. But fear, on the other hand, is preserved by the threat of punishment, which rarely fails.

People love according to their own will, and fear according to the will of the person they fear. So it would make sense to establish alliances based on what is within your own control, and not in the control of others.

I am trained in singing classical music, by this I mean operatic stuff, chorale music....Ave Maria, the works. I'm a soprano 1 meaning my range is usually very high.

However, I have a hard time singing pop music. Is this normal? If you can sing one type of music--in this case classical, yet not sing pop well?

she has been reading harry potter fan fiction for 2 years and i have tried reading the stories and the books and the movies and after so much i have been overloaded. she depicts the movies down to every detail. I have been pateint and now that is all she does is read on the computer. she doesn't do any chores and i am not trying to be controlling but how much of one persons life does this take up. I can lay next to her for 6 or 7 hours and she doesn't even turn to look at me.people also notice this and say that it isn't healthy. My freinds and family ask me why i have put up with it for so long and i try to tell them that it will pass but it has been 2 straight years of nothing but fan fiction. I understrand her getting into the books but these aren't the books some of these stories are regular stories and others are smut. gay smut at that about harry and draco. and most of them are these types of stories. i just can't get into these types of stories.

We know that we came from Germany/ Prussia but we still have alot of missing links in between. Any help outside of other gen. websites would be great!

Isn't it true in today's verbiage that "atheism" is not used exactly as the definition in the dictionary which states, "the belief that there is no God, or the denial that God or gods exist"--but as anti-God as in Christian God. Never met atheists who cared much to oppose Hinduism or Islam, as anti-Shiva or anti-Allah.

Thus is atheism a backlash against Christianity then? Take Russell or Freud, both anti-Christian atheists. Right?

Some of my favorites are "The Belgariad" by David Eddings; "Eragon", "Eldest" by Paolini. Other authors I like is David B. Coe, Stepen Donaldson. I also recently got it to reading manga. So far I have read Ceres Celestial Legend by Yuu Watase.
Anime movie suggestions also. I have just about all Hayao Miyazaki anime DVD including "Spirited Away".

I can understand agnostics (those who do not deny the possibility of God's existence and don't really care) being spiritual, but are you atheists?

Do you reject certain forms of spirituality, including Buddhism? Wicca? Scientology? These are just some philosophies/beliefs a bit off from the mainstream spirituality or actually have beneficial qualities (like Buddhism and mediation).
