I haven't studied anything about an empire called Delhi dynasty but I know that the Sultans were the first muslim rulers. In the battle of Tarain(1192 A D) Prithviraj Chauhan was defeated by an afghan ruler Muhammad Ghori. Ghori left his trusted deputy Qutbuddin Aibek to rule India. This marked the beginning of a new empire in India. Later there were many more muslim dynasties like the Khiljies and so on. Then came the mughals.
