The "boom" would represent the main concussion of the lightning - so why doesn't that big boom sound reach your ears first, followed by the softer rumbles? Why is there often a softer building rumble or crackling before the big "boom" sound? How do the softer sounds make it to your ears first?

im 17, and dropped out of high school awhile back. I went to take the pre-test for the GED exam today. I got a 330, and you supposed to get atleast a 410 on the pre-test. I feel like giving up. The only reason I want to get my G.E.D. is so I can enlist in the USAF. I feel like I am too stupid to continue. I still have 3/5 tests to take to complete the pretest. Should I just go ahead and finish it out and see how I do as a whole?

As an editor, I read...a lot. I get five to six unsolicited submissions a week, not to mention submissions for our writing contest currently running. There are certain phrases that just scream amateur at me.

Raven haired---unless the woman has black feathers coming out of her head, don't use this descriptive phrase. Same goes for flame haired. Unless her head is on fire, she does not have flamed haired. In either case, there have to be better ways to describe a woman with black hair or red hair.

"What he/she/it didn't know..." normally followed by four paragraphs of dull, lifeless backstory that has little or no bearing on the story.

Variant spellings of "Cain." Yeah, yeah. I get it. Trying to play off the biblical name and all that. But it's been done a thousand and forty-seven times, and changing the spelling to Kain, Kaine, Caine, Kane, Kayn, or any other variant doesn't make it any more original.

So, what phrases do you think are overused in fiction?

All too often you see overweight kids, and childhood obesity is running rampant in our communities. You see these kids with donuts and chips and cookies and ice cream and soda. But you never see them with apples, yogurt or cheese...when you see the parents, they are almost always just as big. When you run into them shopping, the cart is full of sugar and instant gratification meals, mac and cheese and canned crap. These things are fine once in while, but you know these folks and you know that this is all they eat, never tossed salad or grilled lemon chicken with steamed asparagus and rice pilaf. These children are headed for lives of ridicule and an obscene amount of health problems....now, this question is for the junk food eaters....NOT health problems that cause weight gain..I am an average sized adult with 3 boys, all of my boys are average sized...my 4 yr old weighs 45lbs, my 10 yr old-60lbs& my 11 yr old-70. I know an 11 year old child that weighs over 120lbs...healthy?

No more spending millions of dollars on prosecuting and keeping mutant, savage predators like him alive. Get some rope find a tree and string him up. Let him swing there a few days as a example. Guarentee we would live in a safer place.

I bought my car in february. It has had problems ever since....its been back to the dealer for service about 10 times already (mostly for sensors, check engine light). It is all covered under warranty but it is a pain in the neck not having my car when its being serviced. Thats why I got a new car!
So its been a little over 4 months....is it too late?

I live in Massachusetts.

then bounces off the catcher and hits the batter after he has left the batter's box and on his way to first. Seems like it would be treated the same as getting hit by a thrown ball (which is really nothing). Not a dead ball, not an out.

Why do some people who have dissed God, feel that Christians live a hypocritical life(of which not a single one is beyond reproach)? Yes, there are the fanatics out there, religious, political, and every other nutcase under the sun which poisons the well...

But, is it really God which makes one "feel guilty" or is it the accountability factor which really makes people uncomfortable? In our no-fault, it wasn't me, finger pointing society, which is extremely vindictive and unforgiving, is it any wonder, God gets a bad rap?

Does man bastardize God? Or do our actions(or lack of action) condemn us? Enslave us?

We are fighting a war in IRAQ...and praying for our side to win...guess what...there are people on the other side of the world praying to the same God for the same outcome(just like Soccer Moms who want Jimmy/Jane to "win")...and God must me shaking...what have I done?! What have I created here?!

Don't "feel" guilty...make a difference(in you) and others as well.

Is it unreasonable to want my partner to kiss me hello when he comes home? I just want a little hug and kiss or 'missed you' or a little something to know that hes happy to see me.
When I give HIM the kiss when he comes home he said it feels like im 'attacking' him and he cant get a chance to set his things down even.

Is it unreasonable of me to want more love from him? I feel like Im just not getting enough attention/love/affection/companionship.
