i wrote a check dated Dec. 1st, 2006 to a school. it still has not been cashed. is there a specific # of days the school has to cash the check?? it has been almost 2 months and the check has not been cashed. is it too late for them to cash the check??? help me...

I have a 17 yr old son who earned $1200 at a PT job in 2006. I know that I can claim him on my return as he is a FT student living with me.

Question - if I do claim him do I have to add his income to my return?

Question 2 - If he files his own return can I still claim him on mine?

Please advise.

I'm an author. I have a character who is being held hostage in a garage. It's winter in Merced California so it could get down to freezing but more likely will be low 40's at night to mid 50's in the daytime. He is restrained in a chair so can't move around. Need an idea how long before his core temp would drop below 95 degrees. Might there be an equation for figuring this. Where might I look for an answer?

Our school system is catering more and more to the kids today than ever! Now, they are concerned that students are not getting the required "9" hours of sleep per night to perform their daily studies. On an average, a nation-wide study showed most school students are not getting to sleep until 11pm, causing fatigue during the day, and lack of concentration. Now, they are considering moving the school day to start an hour later. I find this totally rediculous. Kids today have the computer and internet to do their homework, there is even a section on Yahoo Answers specifically for homework help! They are having everything handed to them for their convenience, and are not learning the sense of time management, responsibility, or setting short-term goals for themselves. It starts at home, with parental guidance, discipline and supervision over schoolwork. It is then, school officials should enforce the progress of the student.

My brother and I inherited a substantial amount of money from our father in 2001. My brother is 63 years old, I am 57. I have invested the money properly, and it will help me and my wife in our retirement if I protect it. My brother, however, has already spent his share of the inheritance. Trips to Europe, expensive jewelry, etc. He doesn't work for a living, and has no visible means of supporting himself. Throughout his life, he never held a steady job and my parents always gave him money to get by. He has run out of money and now wants to “borrow” from me.

I am usually a generous person, but if I begin supporting my brother, I'm afraid that my wife and I won't have enough money to retire.

How do you think I should handle this?
