Mention of "the only true God" seems to denote false/true Gods to sort out. Mention of "false Christs shall arise" seems to denote a false Christ could make a false Christ-ian. Not to mention there are false apostles, false prophets, also false teachers and preachers among you to mark and avoid since such like cause division rather than peace.
So the exhortation is "believe not" every spirit, but rather try (test) the spirits to know which is witch of false/true spirits, since one of twain is said to be "antichrist". And if "God is a Spirit", then one of twain Gods is antichrist, or anti-"the end of the law" if Christ is defined as "the end of the law"(Rom 10:4).
Many seem to focus on 'believe" rather than "know", saying we won't know till we die; which seems to be a bit late for knowing. Not to mention devils "believe" there is one God, theirs: Law.
Perhaps we should move on, from believing to knowing, for it is knowing that makes you free of believing the lies(laws).
