Personally I think the refereeing has been a bit rediculous this year and that too many matches have been controlled by the referee instead of by the players. Hell, in the travesty that was the America vs. Italy game I'm surprised the REF didn't call a PK to decide the entire match. In my opinion the referee is only suppossed to help the match along and not dictate it. I know it's a fine line but I think this World Cup has been horrible! What do you think?

Most of the refs have been reasonable but a few of them just lost it.
The ref in the Portugal - Netherlands game was on of the ones that was totally out of his mind.
I think he just gave out some of the red card to the players that shouldn't have even gotten yellow cards just because they looked at him "in a way that wasn't respectful" or something stupid like that. I think that ref needs to find a therapist and fast too. At least before he looses his job.

The refereeing has been spotty - they missed a ton of calls, but that's also because their angle is different from camera angle. Pro soccer players act like children - every 2 minutes another guy is on the ground grimacing. That type of nonsense and acting would never make it in the NBA/NHL. It looks like the refs cater to the players who act very much. The calls are also very late. A "foul" takes place, the guy goes down, and 2 seconds later the ref makes the call. The whole time from incident to call is too long and makes it obvious that the ref's call is heavily influenced by the player's reaction. Not saying that it doesn't happen in NBA, for example, but in world cup it's ridiculous.

There have been mistakes, that's inevitable as they are only human. However, they have also been put in a difficuly position by FIFA. There were many changes in the Laws of the Game that just went into effect before the World Cup began. The players aren't familiar with them, and the referees are getting used to them.

FIFA also came down with directives that unsporting behavior be punished more harshly. The players have been told this, but they don't seem to realize that FIFA really means it. I've noticed that the incidents of poor sportsmanship have been reduced as the games have progressed.

I wouldn't call it horrible but it has been a little ridiculous. I think the refs have made some pretty poor decisions but I think that is because FIFA has told them to be stricter. The refs have been given more control over the game that has been seen before, I think.

Way too many red cards. The officials are deciding too many games and are far too involved.
