I'm going to NYC in May and my teacher said not to carry a purse or bag because I would get robbed instantly. Any truth to that?

Hello,
I'm going to New York tommorow and I heard it will snow and be around 33 degress but will feel like 21. I will be walking around mostly, so what kind of clothing would you recommend?
Would a trench be fine?
Or should I wear my wool coat.
Thanks.

We're planning on visiting Manhattan soon and we just had a few questions that maybe someone who lives here can answer...

Where can we purchase Metro Passes? How much are they? how long do they last?

Is there ways to get from the subway (since that is our only way of transportation) to places outside of Manhattan (Brooklyn, Bronx)

Where exactly can we go for shopping? ( the cheap counterfeit shopping, and the other shopping)

What are some sightseeing places other than Statue of Liberty, Empire State?

and just for the hell of it....does anyone know the location of thats central perk coffee place that they used to tape Friends episodes in? or the Seinfeild Resturant Diner?

i'm moving to new york for a job in less than 2 months. i'm thinking of living in the city for a couple of months, then buy something on the outskirts vs. renting forever like here in L.A. any tips on finding month-to-month rentals in or around new york city for a few months? (and i should note that i'd like to live in a culturally diverse area if possible) Thanks for your insight!

I'm thinking about traveling up to NYC this summer with my family on vacation. The rates inside of NYC are too expensive (looking for preferablly under $100 per room per night). I was thinking about staying out in Newark and catching the PATH-Rapid Transit System into the city if that is possible. I know that when I was there on my first trip about four years ago (with my school) and drove into the city each day. I would prefer to stay away from driving into the city if possible. I know that once in the city we can catch MTA for the week for $24 (I was there last summer for a week). I would say we could stay in a hostel and take Amtrak into Grand Central (last summer too), but Amtrak is a little expensive from where I'm coming from and it would be cheaper to drive up. I know that a lot of people commute from Newark which gave me that idea. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

A group is lobbying to get a designated "Little Britain" neighborhood in New York City, as there is a Little Italy, Chinatown, etc. Should they get it? What do you Brits, either in the U.S. or in the U.K., think of this?

I have 7 day unlimited metrocards that I've been trying to sell for $22 each (regular value - $24) for about a month, and no one seems interested. I've tried Craigslist. Are there any other outlets that I haven't thought of? I don't want to pay ebay fees, and i need to get rid of these cards because I no longer take the train.

Very close to the NY Stock exchange.
Accorfing to the site (www.cheapotravel.com) I could catch the

M60 Bus
From: La Guardia To: 125th Street, Manhattan

At the125th St. in Harlem (6 trains stop therethe A,B,C,D,2,3,4,5)

Whitch train is best to get me to lower Manhattan?

OR (Also according to the same site)

Q33 Bus
From: Manhattan To: La Guardia (and vice versa)

Hop on this bus outside of any of the airport terminals and ride it to the end of the line, where you'll find a massive subway hub. Two connected stations, the 74th St, Broadway, serving the 7 train, and the Jackson Heights/Roosevelt Avenue, serving the E,F,R,V or G trains allow you to get to many different locations in Manhattan without changing trains, and just about anywhere on the island with only one additional train.

I'm from Houston, TX and I've NEVER caught a subway in MY LIFE! How will I know I'm at my stop? Any advise would be great, thank you.

PS I'm leaving Tommarrow.

Im 19, unemployed, and in college. I lived in Cleveland or around it all my life, and miserable here. i got no family, few friends, and lost my job. i dont drive, and the public transportation here sucks. in my neighborhood, literally, im pretty much the only Indian...and the east Indian community here in Cleveland is very low, compared to new york. all my friends tell me the reason things are falling apart here is so i can move on, and i always had the idea to move to nyc, but i just never really acted on it. I dont drive, which is good if in nyc. i know cost of living there is high, but with SSI income, how much is that in new york? any other financial benefits? Im lookin into workin for any library there, and prolly gonna have a second job. how much does the library pay for a page? or clerk? i been to nyc before, spent a lot of time in Jackson Hts n Flushing, and i really miss it there. i felt happy for once. i cried when i left. any ideal neighborhoods w lots of Indians? ne ideas?

I'm looking for a few bars that would be good to go to on a Sunday afternoon/evening in Manhattan that will be kind of low key, but not necessarily upscale and stuffy. I'm thinking a typical watering hole/pub type atmosphere. Maybe some place with live music that isn't so loud that you can't have a coversation. Preferably something that may get you tapping your feet and possibly a dance every now and then.

I'm going to be with some friends but also have a few older family members with us that are not going to enjoy a loud club type scene.

Location in manhattan isn't an issue. Something clean and safe please!
