You should buy it in person. A good friend of mine was in a similar situation and wasn't able to use the ticket. Make sure to come early enough - at least 1.5 hours before you plan to go. It may seem excessive, but there are pretty long wait times and the lines are long. Bring an ipod or a friend to chat with. But come early.
If you are lucky and don't have to wait that long, you can walk around and take some photos - it is an absolutely beautiful place. The ferry goes from Battery Park City, which opens an amazing view of the downtown. If you walk north along the Hudson river, you can also get a treat - the Hudson river park. There is a view of the Jersey shore line, but also it's just a great park!!
If you plan on going, make sure to visit the park. It took my breath away. It's not like Central park - the lawns are small and there's lots of concerete. But, there are great jogging paths, and a beautiful combination of greenery and downtown architecture and skyscrappers.
When I first came to the city, I went to Liberty Island...Totally overrated. I get the symbolism and all, but you can see it from the shore in Hudson river park / Battery Park city. Perhaps, I had too high expectations... It's a great place to visit, but the wait and the lines can kill the mood. Instead I would suggest a walk in Central or Hudson River Parks, the opera, Broadway shows, movie theaters, shopping, whatever.
You choose. The best place about the city is, there's something here for everyone.
Hope this helps!

buying it on the day of wouldn't really affect anything, but get there early! the lines for the ferry can get really REALLY long. and then you have to wait on another line once you get to liberty island, because security there takes like five minutes for every person. did i mention the lines? anyway, it's well worth the wait, because the statue is a national icon, and it's nice to meet the lady semi-upclose and personal (i say semi because you can't actually go into the statue itself, only the pedestal). have a great time in NYC!

buy it at the ferry the day you want to go. You'll be wasting your money if you do it online if your mother doesn't show up with a photo id.
